Hormonal Diagnosis

For a discussion of bio-identical hormones, please see Lara's Natural HRT article.
Hormones and Health
Hormones are the key to unlocking health. They fire metabolism, build muscle, create sleep, fuel digestion, determine personality and mood.
What are your hormones doing?
Hormonal disorders are on the rise. This is a direct result of damage to hormonal systems by pollutants and improper diet. See Sensible News and the Sensible News Archive for articles about xeno-estrogens and carbohydrate diets affecting hormones. Both women and men experience a change in hormones once they hit 40.
What are the most common hormonal conditions?
We usually start by measuring your hormone levels. If you have recent results, bring them to your appointment. If you do not, our Naturopaths will order blood tests or saliva tests for you. for more information about saliva testing, please read Issue 28 of Sensible News.
Diagnosis by Symptom evaluation
Your symptoms and medical history give us the best information. You can start by checking your own hormones at our self-assessment page.

Other common hormonal conditions:
Oestrogen dominance is the ratio of too much oestrogen compared to progesterone. It is caused by estrogen-mimicking pollutants in our environment, use of the birth control pill, over-production of stress hormones, and poor liver detoxification of oestrogens.
Symptoms of Oestrogen Dominance.: Fibroids, PMS, Heavy bleeding, Endometriosis, Underactive thyroid, Sugar cravings, Fibrocystic breasts, and irritability.
Treat with natural progesterone and oestrogen-lowering supplements.
Andropause is the result of declining testosterone and too much oestrogen!
Symptoms of Male Menopause.: Depression and fatigue, High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Decreased libido and erectile dysfunction,
Enlarged prostate.
Treat with bio-identical testosterone and oestrogen-reducing supplements.
Chronically high insulin from a diet too high in bread and sugar. It directly affects the production estrogen and testosterone. See Sensible News 17 for more information about insulin.
Symptoms of Insulin Resistance.: Weight gain around the waist, High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Bread cravings.
Underactive Thyroid.
Too little production of active thyroid hormone (T3) is easily overlooked by conventional blood tests. See Lara's article on underactive thyroid for more information about thyroid testing and treatment.
Imbalance of adrenal hormones is at the root of many other hormone imbalance. The stress glands may produce too much or too little cortisol. DHEA declines with age, and is seriously deficient in many types of auto-immune disease. Menopausal women with depleted adrenal reserve will usually have low testosterone as well as low oestrogen. Depletion of adrenal hormones underlies many cases of under active thyroid.
Symptoms of Adrenal Stress: Allergies, Fatigue, Cold Hands and Feet, Low blood pressure.
See Low Blood Pressure article for more information about adrenal exhaustion.
